RIU also supports the circular economy with its projects in Mallorca and Tenerife, and similar initiatives will be launched in other destinations in the future. These public private projects aim to create a sustainable tourism community, reduce waste and source locally produced products for hotels. In addition, RIU is committed to renewable energies and 20 of its hotels already have photovoltaic systems. This, together with the use of a certified green energy supply, has led to a 27% reduction in the company’s CO2 emissions.

RIU currently has flagship projects with the NGOs Oceanus in Quintana Roo (Mexico) and Projeto Biodiversidade in Cape Verde. The former creates and maintains coral nurseries to increase the reefs’ resilience and adaptation potential and promote the recovery of associated species. The latter protects the ecosystem of the loggerhead sea turtle, a threatened species whose numbers have multiplied in recent years thanks to the efforts of volunteers and private entities.
