The chain’s history
opening of the hotel Riu Taino in Punta Cana in 1991. This was the first major step in RIU’s growth in the Americas, where it now has 45 hotels. In 1993 the Riu family strengthened its relationship with TUI by creating the company RIUSA II SA, which operated all the RIU brand hotels. Following the passing of Luis Riu Bertrán in 1998, his children Carmen and Luis Riu took over the company and continue to manage it to this day. In 2010, RIU embarked on one of the biggest challenges it had ever faced as a company with the launch of its RIU Plaza urban line, opening hotels in some of the world’s major cities such as New York and Madrid, and it quickly consolidated its commitment to this new line of business. The chain’s next challenge was to expand into Asia, a process that began in 2016 with the opening of the Riu Sri Lanka. RIU has changed its sustainability strategy over the past decade, and in 2024, the hotel chain wants to take the final step in this journey to achieve coherent but ambitious goals that will prepare the company for a more sustainable future.
RIU was founded by Juan Riu and Maria Bertrán in 1953 when they purchased the San Francisco hotel in Mallorca, together with their son Luis Riu Bertrán. The company gained strength in the Balearic Islands during the 1960s and 1970s thanks to a partnership with TUI (Touristik Union International) in 1977. Some years later in 1985, they opened the hotel Riu Palmeras, which was their first hotel in Gran Canaria. This step marked the beginning of the company’s journey outside the Balearic Islands.
