EN Until recently, scientists had seemed to agree that the origin of Central America dated back 3.5million years. But work undertaken on the Panama Canal has brought this theory crashing to the ground. Rocks, together with animal and plant fossils found during the ex- tension of the trans-oceanic waterway reveal that we have to gomuch further back in time. It seems that Central America was formed some 23million years ago, when the Caribbean Plate crashed into the South American Plate, producing the Isthmus of Panama. While fossils reveal the real age of Central America, Panama has focussed on the present and the future. With one of themost stable economies in the region, theWorld Bank has identified Panama as the Latin American country with greatest growth potential over the coming years. Its capital is one of the world’s main banking centres andmany consider it as the ‘Miami of South America,’ having become a shopping destination just as popular as this North American city.

Während die Fossilien Erkenntnisse aus grauer Vorzeit zu Tage bringen, konzentriert sich das Panama von heute ganz auf seine Gegenwart und Zukunft. Wegen seiner sehr stabilen Wirtschaft ist Panama von der Weltbank zum Landmit dem größtenWachstumspotential Lateinamerikas für die kommenden Jahre erklärt worden. Die Hauptstadt, einWelthan- delszentrumund internationaler Finanzplatz, wird wegen ihrer Eigenschaft als Einkaufs- paradies auch als das „Miami Zentralameri- kas” bezeichnet.

Parece ser que el nacimiento de América Central se produjo hace unos 23millones de años, cuando la placa del Caribe chocó contra la de Sudamérica, produciendo así el levantamiento del istmo de Panamá. Ymientras los fósiles delatan la edad real de Centroamérica, Panamá se ha centrado en forjar su presente y su futuro. Con una de las economíasmás estables de la zona, el BancoMundial lo ha señalado como el país latinoamericano conmayor potencial de crecimiento en los próximos años. Su capital, además, es uno de los principales centros bancariosmundiales ymuchos la consideran como ‘laMiami de América del Sur’ tras haberse convertido en un ‘destino de compras’ tan popular como la ciudad estadounidense.
