EN José Campaner is employed by RIU Hotels & Resorts, although he has been ‘liber- ated’ fromhis duties to work as chairman of the Campaner Foundation, whose goal is to prevent, treat and eradicate noma in children. This infectious disease is very common in poor countries; it affects the soft parts of the face and can even destroy bones in a very short space of time. Mr Campaner found out about the disease after fostering Fatima, a 4-year-old child from Niger. He accompanied her to her country and found out about the social and sanitary conditions of children with the illness. Cam- paner committed himself to doing everything possible to help themand their families, and so his foundation was born. Since then he has had the support of RIU, which has sponsored a number of projects undertaken in the Re- public of Niger. These include a health centre and shelter that the foundation runs in Diffa, and a primary school and shelter in the capital Niamey, accommodating boys studying at high school. The latest WHO data show that, thanks to this andmany other projects, the number of people affected by noma is considerably lower since the Campaner Foundation arrived in the country.

DE José Campaner ist ein sogenannter ,freier’ Mitarbeiter des RIUHotels & Resorts, damit er sich voll und ganz seiner Tätigkeit als Vorsit- zender der Campaner-Stiftung widmen kann. Ziel der Stiftung ist die Behandlung, Vorsorge und Bekämpfung von Noma, einer infektiösen, hauptsächlich in der DrittenWelt auftretenden Krankheit der Weichteile imGesichtsbereich, die im schlimmsten Fall auch die Knochen befallen kann. J. Campaner kammit dieser Krankheit über sein Pflegekind Fatima, einemvierjährigen Mädchen aus der Republik Niger, in Kontakt. Als er sie in ihr Land zurückbegleitete, konnte er aus nächster Nähe die sozialen und hygie- nischen Bedingungen der kranken Kinder mit ansehen und entschloss, alles, was in seinen Händen lag, zu unternehmen, um ihnen und ihren Familien zu helfen. So entstand die Stiftung. Seitdemhat er unter der Schirmherr- schaft von RIU verschiedene Projekte in der Republik Niger ins Leben gerufen, beispiels- weise ein Zentrum für ärztliche Betreuung, ein Aufnahmeheimder Stiftung in Diffa, eine Grundschule sowie ein weiteres Aufnahme- heim in der Hauptstadt Niamey für Schüler der weiterführenden Schule. Laut den letzten Daten der Nichtregierungsor- ganisation haben diese und andere Projekte dazu geführt, dass die Zahl an Noma-Erkrank- ten seit der Gründung der Campaner-Stiftung stark zurückgegangen ist.

Una enfer- medad infecciosamuy común en el Tercer Mundo y que afecta a las partes blandas de la cara, llegando, incluso, a destruir los huesos en un tiempo extremadamente rápido. El señor Campaner conoció la enfermedad cuando acogió en su casa a Fátima, una niña de 4 años de la República de Níger. Tras acompañarla a su país y conocer las condicio- nes sociales y sanitarias de otrosmuchos niños enfermos, Campaner se comprometió a hacer todo lo posible para ayudarles a ellos y a sus familias. Y así nació su fundación. Desde entonces, ha contado con la colaboración de RIU que ha patrocinado varios de sus proyec- tos llevados a cabo en la República de Níger, entre ellos, el centro de asistencia sanitaria y de acogida que la Fundación dispone en Diffa, o la escuela primaria y la casa de acogida en la capital, Niamey, donde se alojan los chicos que cursan estudios superiores. Los últimos datos de la OMS demuestran que, gracias a estos y otrosmuchos proyectos, el número de afectados por el NOMA se ha reducido considerablemente desde la llegada al país de la Fundación Campaner.
