EN Nothing new. Research has shown global warming has been affecting reefs in the Caribbean for more than a hundred years. During this time, their temperature has risen by more than half a degree. The result has been the disappearance of many of these reefs, with the loss of the precious biodiversity they contain. Fortunately, organisations such as Oceanus A.C. strive to prevent this scenario from happening through a series of marine and coastal ecosystem conservation programmes. RIU has been supporting Oceanus for almost three years. We have funded the sowing of over one thousand coral colonies per year, together with their maintenance, in the Isla Mujeres West Coast National Park, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc (Mexico). We have also provided accommodation for the experts who look after the beds. Despite the tropical storms and hurricanes (Delta and Zeta) that struck the Caribbean in 2020 and the limitations imposed by the pandemic, the organisation has succeeded in creating 2,000 colonies between 2019 and 2021. This figure is set to grow further in 2022 and 2023, thanks to support from RIU. The proliferation of reefs has also boosted the density and abundance of fish in these areas, especially among herbivores. Like the other programmes RIU is involved in, the work of Oceanus contributes to various of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda: Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land.

DE Das Problem ist nicht neu. Einige Studien versichern, dass die globale Erwärmung die Korallenriffe in der Karibik schon seit mehr als hundert Jahren beeinträchtigt. In all dieser Zeit ist ihre Temperatur um mehr als ein halbes Grad angestiegen, was zum Verschwinden vieler dieser Riffe und damit zum Verlust der Artenvielfalt in diesem Gebiet geführt hat. Glücklicherweise kämpfen Organisationen wie Oceanus A.C. seit vielen Jahren dafür, dieses Szenario durch verschiedene Programme und Aktionen zum Schutz der Meeres- und Küstenökosysteme zu verhindern. Seit fast drei Jahren wird Oceanus durch RIU unterstützt. Das Hotelunternehmen hat die Anzucht von jährlich 1.000 Korallenkolonien und deren Pflege im Nationalpark Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun und Punta Nizuc (Mexiko) finanziert und stellt den Fachleuten, die sich um die Korallen kümmern, Unterkünfte zur Verfügung. Trotz der Tropenstürme und Hurrikans (Delta und Zeta), die im Jahr 2020 in der Karibik wüteten, und der Verzögerung der Programme aufgrund der Pandemie, wuchs die Zahl der Kolonien zwischen 2019 und 2021 um 2.000. Diese Zahl wird mit der Unterstützung von RIU in den Jahren 2022 und 2023 weiter steigen. Die Ausbreitung der Korallenriffe hat auch zu positiven Auswirkungen auf Anzahl und Vielfalt von Fischen in den Gebieten geführt, insbesondere in der Gruppe der Pflanzenfresser. Wie viele andere Programme, die RIU unterstützt, verfolgt auch das gemeinsam mit Oceanus A.C. durchgeführte Projekt die Umsetzung mehrerer der 17 Ziele der UN-Agenda 2030 für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung. In diesem Fall geht es um diese drei Bereiche: Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz, Leben unter Wasser und Leben an Land.

ES No es un problema reciente. Algunos estudios aseguran que el calentamiento global lleva afectando a los arrecifes del Caribe desde hace más de cien años. En todo este tiempo, su temperatura ha aumentado en más de medio grado, provocando la desaparición de muchos de estos arrecifes, y con ellos la pérdida de biodiversidad en la zona. Por suerte, entidades como OCEANUS A.C. llevan años luchando para evitar este fatal escenario a través de diversos programas y acciones para la conservación de los ecosistemas marinos y costeros. Una empresa que, desde hace casi tres años, cuenta con la colaboración de RIU. La compañía hotelera ha financiado la siembra de 1000 colonias de coral al año y su mantenimiento en el Parque Nacional Costa Occidental Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc (México), además de proveer de alojamiento a los técnicos responsables del mantenimiento de los viveros. Una labor que, a pesar de las tormentas tropicales y los huracanes Delta y Zeta que azotaron el Caribe en 2020, junto con la ralentización que las actividades de estos programas sufrieron con motivo de la pandemia, ha permitido el incremento de 2000 colonias entre 2019 y 2021. Un número que seguirá creciendo a lo largo de 2022 y 2023, con el apoyo de RIU. La proliferación de los arrecifes, además, ha traído consigo cambios positivos en cuanto a la densidad y abundancia de peces en estas zonas, especialmente en el grupo de los herbívoros. Al igual que otros muchos programas en los que colabora RIU, el llevado a cabo junto a OCEANUS A.C. persigue la consecución de varios de los 17 objetivos sostenibles de la Agenda 2030. En este caso se concreta en estos tres: acción por el clima, vida submarina y de los ecosistemas terrestres.
