One of the most interesting crossings is to Governors Island, whose claims to fame include hosting disarmament talks between Re- agan, Bush and Gorbachev in 1988. Another option is Ellis Island, which became the United States’ first Federal immigration station in the 19th century. Between 1892 and 1954, up to 12 million people passed through the small island in search of a better future. A third route, offering what are arguably the best views of the Port of New York, is the Staten Island ferry. Every year, some 20 million journeys are made on this ferry, with passengers enjoying views of the New York’s skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty.
