Si hay dos zonas famosas en Nueva York
que nunca duermen, esas son Times Square y
Broadway. Situadas en el corazón de la Gran
Manzana, muestra de su importancia en el
imaginario colectivo es que Los Ángeles,
la meca del cine, tiene reproducciones casi
perfectas de la primera y de los pedazos más
conocidos de la segunda.
Y es que recrear punto por punto Broadway
(literalmente “paseo ancho”) es una tarea
imposible. Con una longitud superior a los 30
kilómetros, es famosa por sus musicales, aun-
que cuando Nueva York era una colonia holan-
desa llamada Nueva Ámsterdam y esta calle
era el centro de la ciudad, la moral luterana
prohibía las obras teatrales. Esto comenzó a
cambiar a mediados del XVIII, y en el XIX el
arte escénico se movió al centro de la ciudad.
Pero no fue hasta 1866 cuando Broadway dio
los primeros pasos hacia su actual fama.

that never sleep, they must be Times Square
and Broadway. Located in the heart of the Big
Apple, a sign of their importance in the collec-
tive imagination is that there is an almost per-
fect reproduction of the former in Los Angeles,
the Mecca of film, together with reproductions
of the best known parts of the latter.
The fact is that recreating Broadway point by
point would be impossible. Stretching over
30 kilometres, it is famous for its musicals,
although when New York was a Dutch colony
named New Amsterdam and the street marked
the centre of the city, plays were prohibited
by the strict Lutheran morality of the time.
All this began to change in the second half of
the 18th century and the 19th century as the
theatre began to occupy the centre of the city.
However, it was not until 1866 that Broadway
took its first steps towards its current fame.

über 30 Kilometer lang und berühmt für seine
Musicals. Dabei waren, als New York noch eine
holländische Kolonie namens New Amster-
damwar, aufgrund der lutherischen Moral
Theateraufführungen verboten. Dies änderte
sich langsamMitte des 18. Jahrhunderts und im
19. Jahrhundert blühte die Schauspielkunst im
Zentrum der Stadt auf. Doch erst 1866 machte
der Broadway die ersten Schritte in Richtung
seines heutigen Ruhmes.
