CATHEDRAL OF SANTO DOMINGO

ES Habían pasado cuatro años desde la llegada de Colón a América. El almirante encomendó a su hermano Bartolomé la fundación de una nueva ciudad en los territorios mineros del sur. El entonces gobernador civil y capitán general de La Española eligió para ello las orillas del río Oza- ma. La nueva capital española en Nuevo Mundo se llamaría Santo Domingo, en honor a Santo Domingo de Guzmán, patrón del patriarca de los Colón: Domenico Colombo. Mucho tiempo ha transcurrido desde entonces y a lo largo de él la ciudad ha vivido toda clase de acontecimientos y avatares. Sin embargo, en algunos de los rincones de su parte más antigua aún es posible transportarse a aquellos años. La Ciudad Colonial, o Zona Colonial como comúnmente se la conoce, supone una ventana a la que asomarse a aquella época en la que Santo Domingo se convirtió en la Ciudad Primada o primera ciudad del Nuevo Mundo (aunque el primer asentamiento fundado por colonos fuera La Isabela). Calles adoquinadas y paredes de piedra que conservan el pasado colonial de la ciudad para deleite de turistas y lugareños.

EN Four years have passed since Co- lumbus first set foot in the Americas. The Admiral appointed his brother Bartho- lomew to found a new city in the mining lands of the south. Then civil governor and captain-general of Hispaniola, his sibling chose the banks of the Ozama River for the settlement. The new Spanish capital of the New World was christened Santo Domingo, in honour of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the patron saint of the two brothers’ father, Domenico Colombo. The city has had a long and varied history in the intervening centuries. However, it is still possible to find vestiges of those times tucked away in pockets of its old town. The Ciudad Colonial, or Colonial District, is a window in time that allows visitors to peer back to when Santo Domingo was crowned the first city of the New World (although the first settlement founded by the colonisers was actually La Isabela). Its cobbled streets and stone walls conserve the city’s colonial past for the pleasure of tourists and locals alike.

DE Seit der Ankunft von Kolumbus in Amerika waren vier Jahre vergangen, da betraute der Admiral seinen Bruder Bartolomeo mit der Gründung einer neuen Stadt in den Bergbaugebieten des Südens. Der damalige Gouverneur und Oberbe- fehlshaber von Hispaniola wählte dazu das Ufer des Río Ozama. Die neue spanische Hauptstadt in der Neuen Welt sollte Santo Domingo heißen, zu Ehren des heiligen Do- minikus dem Schutzpatron des Patriarchen der Familie: Domenico Kolumbus. Das ist lange her und in der Zwischenzeit ist viel geschehen und die Stadt hat sich gewandelt. In einigen Winkeln der Altstadt allerdings kann man sich noch in jene Jahre zurückversetzt fühlen. Die Kolonial- stadt ist ein Fenster, durch das man einen Blick auf jene Zeit werfen kann, als Santo Domingo zur ersten Stadt der neuen Welt wurde (obgleich La Isabela die erste Sied- lung der Kolonisten war). In den gepflaster- ten Straßen und steinernen Mauern ist die koloniale Vergangenheit zur Freude der Touristen und Einheimischen bewahrt.
