UNA PROVINCIA CON NOMBRE DE CUADRO

EN Punta Cana is located in the province of Altagracia. Many years ago, a portrait of Our Lady of Altagracia (literally, High Grace), the patron of the Dominican Republic, found its way to the easternmost region of the island of Hispaniola from Spain. On ac- count of the many miracles attributed to this painting, a small shrine was built in Higüey in honour of the virgin, where the cathedral is now located and from which the province received its name. DE Punta Cana liegt in der Provinz Altagracia. In diese östlichste Region der Insel Hispaniola gelangte aus Spanien ein Gemälde, das die Jungfrau von Altagracia zeigte. Aufgrund der zahlreichen Wun- der, die dem Gemälde zugeschrieben werden, wurde in Higüey eine kleine Wallfahrtskapelle zu Ehren der Jungfrau errichtet, an deren Platz sich heute die Kathedrale erhebt. Und aus demselben Grund wurde die Provinz nach dem Gemälde benannt. ES Punta Cana se encuentra situada en la provincia de Altagra- cia. Hasta aquella región, la más oriental de la isla de La Española, llegó desde España un cuadro en el que se representaba a Nuestra Señora de Altagracia. Fue por los múltiples milagros que se le atri- buyen a esta pintura por la que se construyó una pequeña ermita en honor a la Virgen en Higüey, sobre la que ahora se asienta la catedral, y el motivo por el que toda la provincia recibió su nombre. EN First opened in 1975, the Puerto Plata cable car takes visitors to the top of the Isa- bel de Torres mountain, o ering views of the spectacular zone from a di erent perspec- tive: up on high. Even though the sea in Pu- erto Plata lacks the distinctive turquoise hue and white sand of Punta Cana, its beaches are no less attractive. In fact, some of them, such as Sosúa or Cabarete, are regarded as being among the finest in the country. DE Die Seilbahn von Puerto Plata fährt seit 1975 zur Spitze des Berges Isabel de Torres und bietet die Gelegenheit, diese spek- takuläre Gegend aus einer anderen Perspek- tive zu betrachten: von oben. Das Meer ist zwar nicht so türkisblau und der Sand nicht so weiß, aber die Strände in Puerto Plata stehen jenen in Punta Cana in nichts nach. Einige, wie die Playa de Sosúa oder die Playa Cabarete, gehören sogar zu den schönsten des Landes. ES Inaugurado en 1975, el funicular de Puerto Plata llega a la cima de la montaña Isabel de Torres, ofreciendo la posibilidad de ver aquella espectacular zona desde otra perspectiva: desde las alturas. Porque, pese a que en Puerto Plata el mar no tiene ese tono azul turquesa ni la arena es tan blanca como la de Punta Cana, sus playas no desmerecen a aquellas. De hecho, algunas de ellas, como Sosúa o Cabarete están con- sideradas entre las mejores del país.
