MORNA: THE SOUNDTRACK TO PARADISE / IM PARADIES ERKLINGT MORNA ES Fue en 2019 cuando la UNESCO convirtió a la morna en Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Había muchas razones para hacerlo. Una de ellas es que este género musical va mucho más allá de la melodía y de la danza, abarcando también la creación poética y la interpretación de las canciones. Aunque es su arraigo en la cultura caboverdiana lo que más caracteriza a este tipo de música, de la que se ha llegado a decir que representa el alma del archipiélago africano. Si hay una voz que interpretó como ninguna otra esta música esa es la de Cesária Évora, la reina de la morna. Su voz afinada acompaña mejor que nadie a los instrumentos de cuerda para cantar con melancólica dulzura todo tipo de emociones. Imposible no reparar en la influencia del fado, pero también en los ritmos africanos que destilan sus canciones. Quien visita Cabo Verde no solo se deleita con lo que ve. También con lo que escucha, porque la morna acompaña a los caboverdianos en los momentos más importantes de su vida, pero también en su cotidianeidad y en sus reuniones familiares. EN There are many reasons why Cape Verde’s morna music received UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2019. One is that the genre goes far beyond its melodies and dances, encompassing the arts of poetic creation and singing. Deeply rooted in the culture of Cape Verde, morna has grown to symbolise the soul of this African archipelago. Évora’s finely honed voice offers a perfect counterpoint to the string instruments and is characterised by her ability to infuse all types of emotions with her sweet melancholy. It’s impossible not to notice the influence of fado music, as well as the African rhythms channelled through the songs. Visitors to Cape Verde will not just be impressed by what they see but also by what they hear. Morna permeates the lives of the people of the archipelago: it can be heard on special occasions but also accompanies everyday life and family gatherings. It’s quite simply the soundtrack to Cape Verde. If there’s one artist that stands out from all the rest, it’s Cesária Évora, the queen of morna.

DE 2019 war das Jahr, in dem die UNESCO die Morna zum Immateriellen Kulturerbe ernannte. Dafür gab es viele Gründe. Einer ist, dass dieses musikalische Genre mehr ist als Melodie und Tanz, es wird auch geprägt durch die Poesie und die Interpretation der Lieder. Doch am charakteristischsten für diese Musik, von der es heißt, sie repräsentiere die Seele der afrikanischen Inselgruppe, ist ihre Verwurzelung in der kapverdischen Kultur. Wenn es eine Stimme gibt, die wie keine andere diese Musik verkörperte, so ist es die von Cesária Évora, der Königin der Morna. Ihre ausdrucksstarke Stimme begleitet besser als jede andere die Saiteninstrumente und besingt mit melancholischer Süße Emotionen aller Art. Nicht zu überhören ist der Einfluss des Fado, genauso wenig wie die afrikanischen Rhythmen, die ihre Lieder prägen. Wer Kap Verde einen Besuch abstattet, erfreut sich nicht nur an den schönen Anblicken, sondern auch an den Klängen. Denn die Morna begleitet die Kapverdier sowohl bei den wichtigsten Ereignissen ihres Lebens als auch im Alltag und bei Treffen mit der Familie: Morna ist der Klang dieser Inseln.
