EN The circular economy is a booming concept that is becoming increasingly present in all sectors, including tourism. Circular Hotels is the name of the project of which RIU participates, along with other hotel chains, with the aim of using bio-waste as a resource for local agriculture. At RIU, we launched the initiative in 2019 at the Hotel Riu San Francisco in Mallorca. The second phase of the project will involve the rest of the chain’s hotels. The aim of the proposal is to establish a management system for the recovery of organic waste, which will be turned into compost and used in the local production of fruit and vegetables locally. These products are later distributed among the participants who donate the organic waste, to make them available to the clients of each establishment. This is a similar objective to that of the Circular Tourist Communities initiative in the Canary Islands, called Circular Tourist Communities, which RIU joined in 2022, with the Riu Palace Tenerife. There, also in partnership with other hotel chains and other public and private entities, work is already underway to create a system that facilitates the transformation of hotel bio-waste into high quality (A+) compost that local farmers can use as fertiliser for their crops. Subsequently, the participating hotels will then commit to the purchasing these zero kilometre products. A system that closes the food cycle in the hotel sector and which is a win-win for all the parties involved, including, of course, the planet itself.

DE Die Kreislaufwirtschaft ist ein boomendes Konzept, das in allen Bereichen, auch im Tourismus, immer präsenter wird. „Zirkuläre Hotels“ nennt sich das Projekt an dem RIU, zusammen mit anderen Hotelketten, teilnimmt und dessen Ziel es ist, Bioabfälle als Ressource für die lokale Landwirtschaft zu nutzen. Bei RIU haben wir die Initiative im Jahr 2019 im Hotel Riu San Francisco auf Mallorca gestartet. In einer zweiten Phase des Projekts werden die übrigen Hotels der Kette hinzukommen. Ziel dieses Vorhabens ist es, ein Managementsystem für die Verwertung von organischen Abfällen einzurichten, welches ermöglicht, diese in Kompost umzuwandeln und für die lokale Produktion von Obst und Gemüse zu verwenden. Diese Erzeugnisse werden dann unter den teilnehmenden Unternehmen verteilt, die ihre Bioabfälle gespendet haben, damit sie den Kunden der jeweiligen Einrichtungen zur Verfügung gestellt werden können. Inseln, der sich RIU 2022 mit dem Riu Palace Tenerife angeschlossen hat. Dort wird bereits in Zusammenarbeit mit weiteren Hotelketten, sowie anderen öffentlichen und privaten Einrichtungen, an der Etablierung eines Systems gearbeitet, das die Umwandlung von Bioabfällen aus Hotels in hochwertigen Kompost (A+) ermöglicht. Diesen können einheimische Landwirte als Dünger für ihre Kulturen verwenden. Anschließend verpflichten sich die teilnehmenden Hotels zum Kauf dieser 0 km-Produkte. Ein System, mit dem der Lebensmittelkreislauf in der Hotelbranche geschlossen wird und das für alle beteiligten Unternehmen, und natürlich auch für den Planeten selbst, ein Gewinn ist. Ein ähnliches Ziel verfolgt die Initiative „Zirkuläre touristische Gemeinschaften“ auf den Kanarischen

ES El de economía circular es un concepto en auge que comienza a estar cada vez más presente en todos los sectores. El del turismo es uno de ellos. Hoteles Circulares es el nombre del proyecto del que forma parte RIU, junto a otras cadenas hoteleras, y que tiene como objetivo el aprovechamiento de los biorresiduos como recurso para la agricultura local. En RIU pusimos en marcha la iniciativa en 2019 en el Hotel Riu San Francisco de Mallorca. En una segunda fase del proyecto se sumarán el resto de hoteles de la cadena. El objetivo de esta propuesta consiste en establecer un sistema de gestión para la recuperación de residuos orgánicos que permita convertirlos en compost y aprovecharlos en la producción de frutas y verduras localmente. Productos que después se distribuyen entre los participantes que donan el residuo orgánico, para poner a disposición de los clientes de cada establecimiento. Un objetivo similar al de la iniciativa que se está llevando a cabo en las islas Canarias, denominada Comunidades Turísticas Circulares, y a la que en RIU nos sumamos en 2022 a través del RIU Palace Tenerife. Allí, también en alianza con otras cadenas hoteleras, así como otras entidades tanto públicas como privadas, se está trabajando ya en el establecimiento de un sistema que facilite la conversión del biorresiduo hotelero en compost de alta calidad (A+) con el fin de que los agricultores locales puedan usarlo como fertilizante en sus cultivos. Posteriormente, los hoteles participantes se comprometen a la compra de estos productos de km 0. Un sistema con el que se cierra el círculo alimenticio en el sector hotelero y con el que todos los agentes implicados ganan, incluido, por supuesto, el propio planeta.
