Cuando habla- mos de Juan Luis Guerra, las cifras marean; sin embargo, a él son otros los números que le importan. 440 son los hercios de la frecuencia de la nota ‘La’, usada por los músicos para afi- nar sus instrumentos. Este número da nombre al grupo en el que está integrado Guerra desde hace 27 años. Y 27 son también los años que lleva casado con su mujer, Nora, con la que tiene dos hijos. Su gorro, su barba recortada y su sempiterna sonrisa son ya un icono en la República Do- minicana, pero Juan Luis Guerra Seijas (Santo Domingo, 1957) no se ha conformado con jugar en casa: ha llevado el merengue a latitudes de ritmos más frescos. Lo ha hecho mantenien- do sus raíces, pero introduciendo esquejes propios. Muchos lo creyeron flor de un día, pero casi tres décadas después de su primer disco, podría decirse que Guerra ha cultivado todo un jardín. Café en el campo o Burbujas de amor son quizá sus éxitos más reconocibles, pero son muchas más las canciones de este dominicano que han retumbado en las radios y discotecas de todo el mundo.

When you talk about Juan Luis Guerra, the figures are overwhelming; however, he is more inter- ested in other kinds of figures. The musical note A, used by musicians to tune their instru- ments, has a frequency of 440 Hz. This number is also the name of the band in which Guerra has been playing for 27 years. 27 is also the number of years he has been married to his wife Nora, the mother of his two children. His hat, his trimmed beard and his perpetual smile have become icons to music lovers in the Dominican Republic. However, Juan Luis Guerra Seijas (Santo Domingo, 1957) has not contented himself with only playing at home and he has taken merengue to other, colder parts of the world. He has done it keeping merengue’s roots but adding his own touches. Many thought his career would be short-lived but, nearly three decades after the release of his first album, Guerra’s success continues. Café en el campo and Burbujas de amor are probably his two greatest hits, a number of other songs by this Dominican singer and songwriter have been played on radio stations and at nightclubs all over the world.
