ES A día de hoy, una de las opciones para disfrutar de este espectáculo es coger un tren a Ella, una población de más de 40.000 habitantes en la provincia de Uva. La línea ferroviaria es muy popular debido a que, mientras los vagones van subiendo hacia las montañas, permite ir disfrutando del paisaje del té y de las tierras de vegetación verde esmeralda salpicadas por los colores de los pañuelos de los recolectores. Del pueblo destaca su biodiversidad, además de espectáculos como las cataratas de Ravana o el Puente de los Nueve Arcos. Las propias factorías organizan circuitos para explicar su tesoro y las formas de cultivarlo conscientes de su gran atractivo. El Hundungoda Tea Estate abre sus 200 acres de terreno, en los que cultiva té, goma, canela, pimiento y coco, a los visitantes que llegan desde Koggala, además de ofrecerles una cata. Lo propio hace Pedro Tea Estate, cerca de Nuwara Eliya, aunque toda la recolección se hace por la noche, cuando se está más frío, por lo que no se ve demasiada acción, según recoge Lonely Planet. De una variedad de la planta principalmente negra, se produce uno de los tés del mundo que más cafeína contiene y se llama té de Ceilán, antigua denominación de la isla durante la coloni- zación. Se puede cambiar el nombre de un país al llegar a la independencia, pero quizá mutar una marca reconocida en el mundo entero suena muy arriesgado.

EN Today, visitors can now enjoy the mar- vel of Sri Lanka’s tea plantations by taking the train to Ella, a town with a population of just over 40,000 in the province of Uva. The popularity of the railway line is partly explained by the fact that it runs high up into the mountains, with beautiful views of the tea plantations, looking out over the emerald verdure that is broken only by the coloured dots of the harvesters’ handker- chiefs. The town is notable for its biodiver- sity and attractions such as the waterfalls of Ravana and the Nine Arch Bridge. The factories themselves are aware of the attraction of the tea plantations and organise tours to allow visitors to explore their treasure and learn about the cultiva- tion of tea. The 200-acre Hundungoda Tea Estate, which grows tea, rubber, cinnamon, pepper and coconuts, o ers tours to visitors arriving from Koggala, with tasting included. Another estate that o ers tours is the Pedro Tea Estate, located close to Nuwara Eliya, although, according to Lonely Planet, “processing only takes place at night when it’s colder, so you’re unlikely to see much action.” One of the world’s strongest teas in terms of ca eine content, Ceylon, Sri Lanka’s old name under colonial rule, is produced from a mainly black variety of the plant. While a country can change its name when it becomes independent, it’s much harder to change the name of a globally recognised brand.
