Un hogar para valientes

A HOME FOR BRAVE LITTLE SOULS / EIN ORT FÜR TAPFERE KLEINE

ES Solo escuchar la palabra ya nos pone en alerta: CÁNCER. Si se acompaña del apellido INFANTIL, a esa sensación la sigue un cierto escalofrío. Pero lo que sintieron los fundadores de la asociación Niños con Cáncer Pequeño Valiente cuando diagnos- ticaron la enfermedad a sus pequeños fue mucho más allá. En su caso, al miedo, la in- certidumbre o la impotencia propia de quie- nes se enfrentan de cara con esta situación se unió cierta desolación al comprobar las carencias del centro hospitalario donde sus hijos debían recibir tratamiento en Las Pal- mas. La misma situación la padecían muchas otras familias. Entonces, ¿por qué no unir sus fuerzas? Lo hicieron en 2007 al crear la asociación y desde entonces ofrecen su apoyo a otros padres y madres de Canarias con hijos enfermos de cáncer. La mejora de la calidad de vida de todos estos niños y sus familias es la razón de ser de todos los proyectos de esta organización autonómica sin ánimo de lucro que desde 2014 cuenta con el apoyo de RIU. El conve- nio de colaboración con la cadena hotelera permitió que aquel año se pudiera poner en marcha el Hogar Pequeño Valiente. Un espacio, próximo al Hospital Materno Infantil de Las Palmas, destinado al alojamiento de aquellas familias procedentes de las islas menores de la provincia durante el tiempo que sus hijos reciben tratamiento en la planta de Oncohematología. Desde 2015 se ha replicado el mismo servicio de hogar de acogida en la isla de Tenerife dando cobertura a todo el archipiélago canario. Los alojamientos también están a disposición de aquellas familias que, aun viviendo en las mismas islas, encuentran dificultades a la hora de trasladarse a sus domicilios para realizar labores cotidianas como ducharse, comer o descansar. Para ello, las viviendas disponen de distintas estancias y todo tipo de servicios a fin de que que las familias de estos pequeños valientes se encuentren como en casa.

EN The mere mention of the word sets us on edge: CANCER. But when accompanied by the word CHILD, it’s enough to make us shudder. However, when the founders of the Asociación Pequeño Valiente for children with cancer found out their children had the illness, they decided to do something di erent. The fear, uncertainty and power- lessness felt by those who find themselves in this situation was mixed with a sense of helplessness when they discovered the lack of facilities at the hospital in Las Palmas where their children received treatment. Realising that many other families had faced the same situation, the question arose: why not join forces? The association was founded in 2007 and provides support to other parents in the Canary Islands whose children are diagnosed with cancer. All the projects of this independent not-for profit organisation, which has been receiv- ing support from RIU since 2014, are based around improving the quality of life for children and their families. The collaboration agreement with the hotel chain allowed the Association to launch the Pequeño Valiente home last year. The space, located close to the Maternal-Child Hospital of Las Palmas, provides accommodation for families travel- ling from the smaller islands of the province while their children receive treatment in the oncohematology ward. Since 2015, the accommodation service has also been rep- licated on the island of Tenerife, making it possible to provide full coverage throughout the archipelago. The accommodation is also available to families who, despite living on the two islands where the homes are located, nonetheless struggle to get back home for everyday tasks such as washing, eating or sleeping. The accommodation of- fers a range of rooms and services to make the families of these brave little souls feel right at home.

DE Allein wenn wir das Wort hören, sind wir schon alarmiert: KREBS. Trägt es zudem den Vornamen KINDER, so folgt auf den Schre- cken ein Schaudern. Doch was die Gründer des Vereins Niños con Cáncer Pequeño Valiente (Kinder mit Krebs Klein und Tapfer) empfanden, als sie die Diagnose ihrer Kinder erhielten, kann man sich wohl kaum vorstel- len. In ihrem Fall gesellte sich zu der Angst, zu der Ungewissheit und Machtlosigkeit, die man im Angesicht einer solchen Situation verspürt, eine gewisse Verzweiflung, als sie sich der Mängel des Krankenhauses in Las Palmas bewusst wurden, in dem ihre Kinder behandelt werden sollten. Vielen anderen Familien erging es ähnlich. Warum also nicht die Kräfte vereinen? Das taten sie im Jahr 2007 mit der Gründung des Vereins. Seitdem unterstützen sie andere Väter und Mütter auf den Kanaren, deren Kinder an Krebs erkrankt sind. Die Verbesserung der Lebensqualität all dieser Kinder und ihrer Familien ist das Motiv der Projekte dieser unabhängigen und gemeinnützigen Organisation, die seit 2014 von RIU unterstützt wird. Die Kooperationsvereinbarung mit der Hotelkette ermöglichte dieses Jahr die Erö nung des Hauses Hogar Pequeño Valiente. Ein Ort ganz in der Nähe der Kinder- und Geburtsklinik in Las Palmas, an dem nun die von den kleineren Inseln der Inselgruppe kommenden Angehörigen unterkommen können, solange ihre Kinder in der Onkologie behandelt werden. 2015 wurde eine solche Unterkunft auch auf Teneri a eingerichtet, so dass nun die gesamte Inselgruppe der Kanaren abgedeckt ist. Die Unterkünfte stehen auch jenen Familien zur Verfügung, die zwar auf der selben Insel leben, denen es jedoch schwer fällt, für Alltägliches wie Duschen, Essen oderzum Ausruhen nach Hause zu fahren. Die Unterkünfte bieten hierfür verschiedene Räume und alle notwendigen Einrichtungen damit die Familien dieser kleinen und tapferen Kinder sich wie zu Hause fühlen können.
