Al principio dudaron en seguir el consejo. Una cosa era el snorkel y otra muy distinta descender a mayor profundidad, con un equipo de buceo y teniendo que controlar cuidadosamente los niveles de oxígeno. Reconocían sentir algo de miedo, pero habían tomado la decisión de probarlo y no había vuelta atrás. Tras unas primeras clases de iniciación, se sintieron más seguras. El instructor insistió mucho en su seguridad y se ocupó concienzudamente de enseñarlas a respirar correctamente bajo el agua. Cuando consideró que estaban preparadas para salir al océano bajo su supervisión, fueron todos hasta las lanchas con los equipos de buceo y se lanzaron al agua.

At first, they weren’t sure whether to follow his advice. Snorkelling was one thing but it was quite another to go deeper, where they would need diving equipment and have to pay careful attention to the oxygen levels. They admitted to being a little scared but they had made their decision. There was no turning back. After a few classes to show them the ropes, they began to feel at ease. The instructor made sure they were safe and took all the time needed to show them how to breathe correctly underwater. When he saw that they were ready for their supervised dive, he took them to the small boats with their diving equipment and they plunged into the water.

Zunächst zögerten sie, ob sie dem Rat folgen sollten. Schnorcheln war eine Sache, aber mit Tauchausrüstung in größere Tiefen hinabzutauchen und dabei sorgfältig die Sauerstoffzufuhr kontrollieren zu müssen war etwas ganz anderes. Sie gaben zu, dass sie etwas Angst hatten, aber sie hatten sich entschieden, es auszuprobieren und nun gab es kein Zurück mehr. Nach ein paar Einführungsstunden fühlten sie sich schon sicherer. Der Tauchlehrer bestand sehr auf ihrer Sicherheit und zeigte ihnen gewissenhaft, wie man unterWasser richtig atmete. Als er fand, dass sie bereit waren, unter seiner Aufsicht im Ozean zu tauchen, gingen sie alle mit ihren Tauchausrüstungen zu den Booten und sprangen ins Wasser.
