ES Hacía tiempo que quería escribir este artículo, pero ella es tan discreta que se resistía. Me refiero a mi madre, Pilar Güell, Doña Pili, quien ha dejado una estela enorme en RIU, y no por ser quién es, sino por cómo es. Por su fuerza, su capacidad de trabajo y su gentileza.

EN I have wanted to write this article for a long time, but she is so discreet that she did not like the idea. I am talking about to my mother, Pilar Güell, Doña Pili, who has left a huge mark on RIU, and not because of who she is, but because of what she is like. Because of her strength, her ability to work and her kindness.

DE Ich wollte diesen Artikel schon lange schreiben, aber sie ist so diskret, dass sie sich dagegen gesträubt hat. Ich spreche von meiner Mutter Pilar Güell, Doña Pili, die RIU sehr geprägt hat, und zwar nicht aufgrund ihrer Person, sondern durch ihre Persönlichkeit. Dank ihrer Stärke, ihrer Tatkraft und ihrer Freundlichkeit. Jeden gut zu behandeln ist einer der Grundsätze, den ich von ihr gelernt habe. Außerdem sind wir beide sehr detailorientiert. In ihrem Fall zeigt sich dies in ihrer langjährigen Erfahrung bei der Aufsicht der Baustellen. „Ich habe immer versucht, alles durch die Augen der Gäste zu sehen”, sagt sie. Mit 87 Jahren ist sie immer noch bei bester Laune und erinnert sich an unzählige Anekdoten, aus denen sich viele Geschäftsweisheiten ableiten lassen. Sie sagt, sie habe keine Lieblingshotels, sie fühle sich in allen zu Hause. Am meisten mag sie diejenigen mit besonderer Aussicht, wie das Riu Palace Maspalomas, aber sie kann sich nicht nur für eines entscheiden. „Wenn man auf der Baustelle arbeitet, ist das bei jedem Hotel, als würde man ein Kind großziehen. Und der Tag, an dem es eröffnet wird, erfüllt einen mit großer Zufriedenheit. Insgesamt habe ich mehr als 60 Hoteleröffnungen miterlebt“, erklärt sie voller Stolz. Doch sie war nicht immer auf den Baustellen. In den ersten Jahren im Hotel San Francisco teilte sie sich mit meiner Großmutter Maria die Aufgaben: Bettwäsche waschen und zum Trocknen aufhängen, Vorhänge und Tischdecken nähen, die Bar oder die Rezeption

recepción…Siempre atenta a lo que podía aprender: desde algún truco de limpieza de una camarera hasta fontanería. Al final, ha acabado teniendo un enorme conocimiento técnico de todo. Se especializó en el departamento de limpieza y durante años organizó el trabajo de las camareras de piso de los hoteles de la Playa de Palma. Allí ideó un pionero sistema de símbolos para organizar el trabajo que se sigue usando hoy, convertido en un programa informático llamado Housekeeping. Impresiona pensar el volumen de trabajo que era capaz de asumir, su fuerza vital y su capacidad natural para motivar. Ha sido una pieza clave en la creación de la empresa que hoy es RIU. Madre de familia, empresaria, trabajadora, amiga. Mi madre es una persona admirable y admirada. Sencilla y directa. Humilde y gentil. Dice estar muy orgullosa de lo lejos que ha llegado RIU, de sus nietos y bisnietos, pero la realidad es que somos nosotros los que sentimos un orgullo enorme, tanto personal como profesionalmente.

Always attentive to what she could learn: from a cleaning trick shared by a maid to plumbing. In the end, she gained an enormous technical knowledge of everything. She specialised in the cleaning department and for years she organised the work of the housekeepers in the hotels of Playa de Palma. It was there that she developed a pioneering system of symbols for organising work, which is still used today in a computer programme called Housekeeping. It is impressive to think of the amount of work that she was capable to take on, her vitality and her natural ability to motivate others. She was a key player in the creation of the company that RIU has become. Mother, businesswoman, worker, friend. My mother is an admirable and admired person. Simple and direct. Humble and gentle. She says she is very proud of how far RIU has come, of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but the truth is that we are the ones who are very proud, both personally and professionally.

betreuen ... Immer darauf bedacht, etwas dazu zu lernen: angefangen von einem Trick beim Putzen, den ihr ein Zimmermädchen verraten hat, bis hin zu Klempnerarbeiten. Am Ende hatte sie sich ein enormes technisches Wissen über alle Bereiche angeeignet. Sie spezialisierte sich auf die Reinigungsarbeiten und organisierte jahrelang die Arbeit der Zimmermädchen in den Hotels an der Playa de Palma. Dort entwickelte sie ein wegweisendes System von Symbolen zur Arbeitsplanung, welches noch heute in einem Computerprogramm namens Housekeeping verwendet wird. Es ist beeindruckend, welches Arbeitsvolumen sie zu bewältigen vermochte, welche Lebenskraft und welche natürliche Motivationsfähigkeit sie besaß. Sie war maßgeblich an dem Aufbau des Unternehmens, das heute RIU ist, beteiligt. Mutter einer Familie, Geschäftsfrau, Mitarbeiterin und Freundin. Meine Mutter ist eine bewundernswerte und geschätzte Person. Einfach und direkt. Bescheiden und liebenswürdig. Sie sagt, sie sei sehr stolz darauf, wie weit es RIU gebracht hat, auf ihre Enkel und Urenkel, aber in Wirklichkeit sind wir es, die einen enormen Stolz empfinden, sowohl persönlich als auch beruflich.

También los dos somos muy detallistas. En su caso queda demostrado en su larga experiencia supervisando las obras. “Siempre he intentado ponerme en los ojos del cliente”, asegura. A sus 87 años mantiene su excelente ánimo y es capaz de recordar infinidad de anécdotas de las que se desprende mucha sabiduría empresarial. Dice que no tiene hoteles favoritos, que en todos se siente como en casa. Le gustan los que tienen vistas especiales, como el Riu Palace Maspalomas, pero no puede escoger solo uno. “Cuando trabajas en la obra, cada hotel es como criar un hijo y el día que se inaugura es una gran satisfacción. En total estuve en más de 60 aperturas”, explica orgullosa. Pero no siempre estuvo en la obra. En los primeros años en el hotel San Francisco se organizaba con mi abuela María para repartirse las tareas: desde aclarar la ropa, tenderla, coser cortinas y manteles, atender el bar o la
